Known as the world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia is an easily accessible destination for any tourist. While many tourists come to Indonesia for vacations, others come for business purposes. Whatever your reason, obtaining the correct Indonesian visa is crucial to ensuring your time here is worthwhile. Indonesia offers various visa types to choose from, and obtaining the right one can be time-consuming. So, here’s what you need to do.

Indonesian Visa Types

Regarding visa types, the tourist’s nationality, purpose of visit, and length of stay in the country are some factors to consider.

Visa-Free Visa

Citizens of several countries, particularly those in Southeast Asia, can enter Indonesia visa-free for short stays of up to 30 days for tourism purposes. This means that tourists only need to show their valid passport at any airport or immigration post anywhere in the country and they are permitted to stay in Indonesia. Visa-free visas cannot be extended or replaced.

Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival for Indonesia (VOA) is the most popular Indonesian visa option used by many tourists worldwide. Not only is it easy to obtain, but a Visa on Arrival can be extended for up to 30 days. With a Visa on Arrival, tourists can spend nearly 60 days in Indonesia, allowing them to explore its beautiful islands and beaches, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage sites. However, applying for a visa on arrival involves long lines at the border to obtain, fill out, and submit the application. Bringing several supporting documents in paper form is also crucial to the overall application process. Here are things you need to know about obtaining a Visa on Arrival in Indonesia.

Tourist Visa

Granting visa holders permission to stay in Indonesia for up to 60 days, a tourist visa is known as the most common type of short-term visa for tourism and leisure purposes. A tourist visa is also a good option when planning to visit friends or family, or to participate in social or cultural activities, such as short research programs. While a visa on arrival is beneficial for many tourists, others prefer a tourist visa because of its online process. Applicants can easily avoid long lines at immigration control.

Business Visa

A business visa for Indonesia is suitable for activities such as attending meetings or conferences, signing contracts, and meeting with potential investors. However, this visa does not permit the holder to perform paid work under any circumstances. Business visas come in two different options, based on the duration of stay: a single-entry visa that allows a 60-day stay and can be extended to a total of 180 days, and a multiple-entry visa that allows multiple 60-day stays within a total validity period of 12 months. A sponsorship letter or invitation from an Indonesian company is required to obtain a business visa.

Transit Visa

Although foreign nationals transiting through Indonesia via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for less than 24 hours or other airports across the country for less than 8 hours, they do not actually require a transit visa for Indonesia. Those who are not visa-exempt must obtain an Indonesian transit visa to pass through the country to their next destination.

Temporary Stay Permit

An Indonesian Temporary Stay Permit is the best solution for those who want to work or study in Indonesia. Also known as a KITAS, a Temporary Stay Permit can grant foreign nationals a stay in the country for a short period of 6 months or a long period of 1 or 5 years. While a work visa requires sponsorship from an Indonesian-based industry and an IMTA work permit, a sponsorship letter from an Indonesian educational institution is required when applying for a research visa.

How to Choose the Right Visa Type for Indonesia

There are several factors that determine the right visa selection, namely:

Purpose of Travel

This is crucial as it is the most important factor in determining which visa application procedure should be used by foreign tourists. For example, if a tourist plans to undertake a business trip, applying for a visa upon arrival is against the law.

Duration of Stay

A Visa on Arrival may be suitable for those who intend to stay for a short period. On the other hand, to stay in the country for a longer period, a different application procedure is required.

Point of Entry

Some types of Indonesian visas, particularly Visa on Arrival, can only be obtained at certain ports.
