How to Get to Sumbawa from Lombok or Bali: Your Ultimate Travel Guide
Sumbawa, an island in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Often overshadowed by its popular neighbors—Bali and Lombok—Sumbawa offers pristine beaches, epic surf, and a laid-back charm. If you’re wondering how to get there from either Bali or Lombok, you’re in the right place.
From Bali to Sumbawa
There are two main routes to reach Sumbawa from Bali:
1.By Air
Flying is the fastest option. You can book a flight from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) to Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport (SWQ) in Sumbawa Besar. The flight takes approximately 1 hour and is offered by regional airlines like Wings Air or Lion Air.
Tips:
- Flights are limited, so book early.
- Prices range from IDR 700,000 to 1,200,000 depending on the season.
2.By Sea and Land
If you’re feeling adventurous or traveling on a budget:
- Take a fast boat from Padang Bai (Bali) to senggigi, Bangsal, or Gili Island (Lombok).
- Drive or take a bus across Lombok to Kayangan Port.
- From Kayangan, board a ferry to Pototano Port in West Sumbawa.
- From Pototano, local transport can take you to Sumbawa Besar or even Bima.
From Lombok to Sumbawa
Traveling from Lombok is more straightforward.
1.By Ferry
Public ferries operate daily from Kayangan Port (East Lombok) to Pototano Port. The trip takes around 2 hours.
Details:
- Cost: Approximately IDR 100,000.
- Ferries depart multiple times daily.
- Vehicles can be transported for an extra fee.
2.By Speedboat
Private speedboats are available for hire but are less common. They’re more expensive and subject to weather conditions.
Getting Around Sumbawa
Once in Sumbawa, options include:
- Renting a car or motorbike.
- Local buses and bemos (minibuses).
- Hiring a private driver for long-distance travel.
Final Tips
- Sumbawa is less touristy, so plan accommodation and transport in advance.
- If surfing is your goal, head to Lakey Peak or Scar Reef.
- Bring cash—ATMs can be scarce in rural areas.
