Snorkeling Manta Point Labuan Bajo with Giant Manta Rays
29 July 2025 30x Adventure, Backpacker, Blog, Nature, Uncategorized

My Magical Encounter at Manta Point
The boat engine cut suddenly as our guide pointed excitedly: “Mantas at 11 o’clock!” Peering into the cerulean waters of Manta Point, Labuan Bajo, I saw dark shadows gliding effortlessly – a squadron of oceanic mantas with wingspans wider than my outstretched arms.
Why Manta Point is Special
Located in Komodo National Park, this cleaning station attracts:
- 30+ mantas daily in peak season (April-October)
- Both reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) and giant oceanic mantas (Mobula birostris)
- Crystal visibility up to 30 meters
As I slipped into the water, a 4-meter female circled curiously below me, her white belly markings clearly visible. The current carried me effortlessly as two juveniles performed graceful barrel rolls near the coral heads.
What Makes This Experience Unique?
- Guaranteed Sightings – 90% success rate in dry season
- No Scuba Certification Needed – Snorkelers can observe from surface
- Thrilling Drift Snorkel – Ride currents alongside mantas
- Conservation Success Story – Manta populations grew 25% since 2014 protection laws
Pro Tip: “Visit at high tide when mantas crowd the cleaning stations. Our 7AM trip saw 18 individuals!” – Captain Zul, local guide since 2012

Final Thoughts
That moment when a manta soared directly beneath me, its wingtip nearly brushing my belly, will forever be etched in my memory. As we sailed back to Labuan Bajo at sunset, I understood why Manta Point is considered one of the planet’s greatest wildlife encounters – accessible to snorkelers of all levels.
